A living encounter with sacred sound

Perhaps you have encountered mantra through yoga, meditation or sound healing.

You may already feel its beauty and power, while also longing to understand more deeply:

Where do these sounds come from?

What do they mean?

How are they traditionally pronounced?

What happens when we approach mantra not through repetition alone, but through deep listening, understanding and practice?

Vāk is an invitation to slow down and meet the living intelligence held within Sanskrit sound.

Across six live gatherings, we will explore oṁ and bīja mantras, with the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya mantra at the heart of this year’s journey.

Traditionally associated with nourishment, healing and liberation, the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya invites us into a profound relationship with change, mortality and that within us which is not bound by fear.

We will approach these sounds slowly—exploring their pronunciation, rhythm and meaning, and their relationship to the body, the senses, the elements and the deeper realms of human awareness.

No previous knowledge of Sanskrit or mantra is required. You need only your presence, your curiosity and your voice.

Sacred Sound

Discover the living Sanskrit sounds through their origins, meaning, pronunciation and resonance.

Mantra

Develop a mantra practice grounded in deep listening, understanding and respect for the tradition from which these sounds come.

Voice and awareness

Explore the relationship between sound, body, silence and consciousness—and listen beneath the spoken voice to the subtler forms of Vāk.

What is Vāk?

Vāk means speech or sacred utterance.

The Vedic teachings tell us that speech exists in four forms. Only one is spoken aloud; the others remain hidden within us.

“The wise know that Vāk—speech—exists in four forms. Three are hidden and the fourth is what humans speak.”

This course invites us to listen beneath the surface of the spoken voice—to the subtle movement through which sound, meaning and consciousness begin to take form.

Sanskrit is not approached here as a language belonging only to the past. Its sounds are alive: carried in the mouth, felt in the body and revealed through the attentive voice.

Through sounding, listening and silence, we begin to experience mantra not as something outside ourselves, but as something we can come into relationship with and gradually embody.

Why twelve weeks?

Sacred sound asks for more than information. It asks for time, practice and integration.

Vāk unfolds through six live sessions spaced across twelve weeks. The time between our gatherings allows you to return to the sounds in your own way, listen more deeply and notice how the practices begin to live within you.

You will have recordings, pronunciation audios and written materials to support you between sessions.

When we meet again, there will be time for questions, shared practice and the discoveries that arise through your own experience.

This spacious rhythm allows the course to become a lived practice rather than something briefly learned and quickly left behind.

What we will explore

Across our six gatherings, we will:

  • Explore Vāk and the four stages of speech
  • Understand the origins, lineage and philosophy of Sanskrit mantra
  • Approach Sanskrit pronunciation as a practice of attention and respect
  • Discover oṁ—its sound, meaning, symbol and relationship to consciousness
  • Experience bīja mantras and their relationship with the elements, senses, body and natural world
  • Enter the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya mantra through pronunciation, rhythm, meaning and embodied practice
  • Explore the relationship between voice, vibration, silence and awareness
  • Develop a personal mantra practice rooted in understanding

The course balances teaching with direct experience. We will learn about the sounds, but we will also chant, listen, reflect and allow them to be felt within the body.

The Mahāmṛtyuñjaya mantra

At the heart of this year’s journey is the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya, an ancient Vedic mantra traditionally associated with nourishment, healing and liberation.

Its imagery invites us to contemplate ripening and release: the possibility of becoming free from what binds us while remaining connected to the source of life.

We will approach the mantra slowly, exploring each sound and word before bringing them together. There will be time to become familiar with its pronunciation, rhythm and meaning, allowing it to develop into an embodied and living practice.

This is not about using mantra to deny loss, difficulty or mortality. It is an invitation to meet these realities with presence—and to listen for that within us which is deeper than fear.

Precision without perfection

Pronunciation matters.

Each Sanskrit sound has its own place of articulation, movement and resonance. Learning to pronounce these sounds more precisely helps us enter more fully into the vibrational intelligence of the mantra.

But precision is not the same as performance or perfection.

You do not need a trained or confident singing voice. You will never be asked to chant alone unless you feel comfortable doing so.

We approach pronunciation slowly and gently—as an act of listening, respect and relationship with the sounds.

Your voice is welcome exactly as it is.

About Lucia

I have been practising, studying and sharing sacred sound for almost fifteen years.

Learning about the origins, teachings and pronunciation of Sanskrit has transformed my own experience of mantra. It has allowed me to approach these sounds with greater understanding, precision and respect.

My teaching brings together Sanskrit, embodied voice, sound healing, silence and deep listening. I offer Vāk with respect for its source teachings and with a commitment to creating a warm, spacious environment in which questions, uncertainty and each person’s unique voice are welcome.

For me, pronunciation is not about proving that we can chant something correctly. It is a way of honouring the sounds and listening more deeply to what they carry.

I would be honoured to share this journey with you.

“Many thanks for a beautiful and deeply healing course. The sessions were a perfect balance between theory and practice, and I was able to deepen my understanding and experience of both Sanskrit healing sounds and oṁ.”

Donna LePerle

“I came to the course to learn about chanting. Many people knew more than I did, but that did not matter. I felt a true sense of community.”

You do not need to know Sanskrit.

You do not need a polished or confident voice.

Only your presence, your curiosity and your willingness to listen are needed.
