Sitali Breath

Sitali, sometimes written Śītalī, is a cooling breath practice.

Here, we invite a sense of cooling and grounding, traditionally associated with the receptive energy of the moon. The practice is beautifully simple. You can follow the steps below or join me in the short video.

The practice

  • Curl the sides of your tongue to form a small tube. If your tongue does not curl, allow it to rest gently between or just behind the lips.

  • Breathe in slowly across the tongue, noticing the cool air as it enters.

  • As the breath reaches the back of the throat, pause briefly if that feels comfortable.

  • Breathe out slowly through the nostrils.

  • Continue for several rounds, without straining.

Notice the touch and temperature of the breath. Become aware of the quality of the inhalation and the quality of the exhalation.

When you are ready, allow your breathing to return to its natural rhythm. Sit quietly for a few moments and observe the effects of the practice.

If you feel light-headed or uncomfortable at any point, pause and return to your normal breathing.
