So’ham Mantra Practice

Welcome to this guided So’ham mantra meditation.

This 20-minute practice brings together breath, inner sound, touch and silence. You can return to it whenever you would like to settle, listen inwardly or reconnect with a quieter sense of yourself.

Towards the end, there is space for gentle self-enquiry and reflection.

What does So’ham mean?

So’ham is a Sanskrit mantra commonly translated as “I am That.”

The mantra is closely associated with the natural rhythm of breathing. In this practice, we listen inwardly to:

so with the inhalation
ham with the exhalation

The mantra is sounded silently within rather than spoken aloud. Breath and awareness gradually come together, inviting us beneath our everyday identities and into the question: Who—or what—am I?

There is no need to search for an answer. The invitation is simply to listen.

Jñāna Mudrā

During the practice, you will be invited to bring the tip of the index finger and thumb gently together. This hand gesture is known as jñāna mudrā and is traditionally associated with knowledge and awareness.

You may use the mudrā if it supports your concentration, or simply rest your hands in whatever position feels most comfortable.

Preparing for the practice

Find a quiet place where you are unlikely to be disturbed.

You can sit on a chair, on the floor or in any position that allows you to feel both comfortable and alert. Nothing needs to be forced. If at any point the practice does not feel supportive, you can open your eyes, return your attention to your surroundings or pause the recording.

Allow the breath to move naturally and let the mantra gradually find its own rhythm within you.

You are welcome to return to this practice as often as you wish.
