Songs of Land and Memory: Sean-nós Singing with Cáit Ní Riain.

Traditional Irish songs carry memories of land, language, people and place.

In this online Listening Field Guest Session, singer and multi-instrumentalist Cáit Ní Riain will invite us into the living tradition of Irish song, with a particular focus on sean-nós—a deeply expressive style of singing shaped by oral tradition, language and relationship with place.

Working slowly, deeply and consciously with the beautiful melodic and poetic lines that have come through the people of this land offers us an opportunity to connect with our ancestral histories/herstory and to notice how their experiences may still echo within our bodies and hearts.

Those who are not from this land are equally welcome. These songs may also invite us to reflect on the traditions, places and memories that have shaped each of us.

No singing experience or knowledge of Irish is needed. You are welcome to sing, listen or simply be present.

All are welcome. Fáilte roimh cách.

About Cáit

Cáit Ní Riain is a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Co. Tipperary. She is deeply rooted in Irish traditional music and song and is influenced by folk musics from around the world that have grown from the ground up, through people’s relationships with land.

She is particularly passionate about the traditional songs of Ireland, the keening tradition, the deep embodiment of voice and voice as a potent healing tool.

Cáit also composes her own music and songs, rooted in themes of wildness, love and the need to decolonise our minds, hearts and bodies.

She plays piano and sings with The Weaving, alongside accordionist and singer Méabh Begley and Leeds-based fiddler Owen Spafford. The trio celebrates the deep taproots of both Irish and English traditional music and song.

Cáit has also created an immersive journey into the traditional songs of Ireland entitled Anam an Amhráin—The Soul of Song. Bringing together embodiment, voice work, language, cultural history and an exploration of place, it invites participants into the wealth that traditional song and the unbridled voice can offer us in mind, body and spirit.

She holds an MA in Irish Folklore and Ethnology from University College Dublin.
