Winter Solstice - gāyatrī mantra practice (online)

Honoring the Return of Light

On the Winter Solstice, we gather over zoom to chant the gāyatrī mantra 108 times — a sacred practice to honor the return of the sun.

The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year — a powerful moment of stillness and renewal. Through the vibration of the gāyatrī, we acknowledge the sun’s life-giving presence and align ourselves with its turning point, as it begins its slow ascent back toward longer days.

One of the most important words of the gāyatrī is dhimahi - which means 'we meditate' - an invitation to come together in community to meditate on the highest brilliance of the source of life.

The number 108 holds deep significance — symbolizing wholeness, cosmic harmony, and the sacred connection between the Earth, Sun, and Moon. Chanting together for 108 repetitions represents a complete cycle — a meditation in rhythm, breath, and light.

We will begin before sunrise, gathering in quiet reflection as dawn approaches.
