Approaches within the Listening Field

Different ways of entering this work

Approaches Within the Listening Field

My one-to-one work draws upon voice, therapeutic sound, breath awareness, poetry, gentle movement and silence. These are not separate treatments that you need to choose between before we meet. They are different doorways into listening.

The focus of each session is agreed together and may change as the work unfolds. We might stay with one approach or allow several to meet naturally, responding to what is present and what feels supportive for you.

The human voice is at the heart of this work—not as performance or something you need to be “good” at, but as a living instrument of breath, vibration, relationship and presence. No singing, musical, poetry or yoga experience is needed. You are welcome exactly as you are.

Voice

Our voice is one of the most intimate ways we meet ourselves and the world. Voicework may include humming, toning, simple sounding, spoken words, chant or periods of listening and silence.

You may be drawn to working with your voice if you feel shy or self-conscious about it, find it difficult to express what you feel, or long to experience greater freedom, confidence and ease. You may also already know that your voice brings comfort or connection and wish to explore it more deeply.

There is no expectation to sing well, perform or make any particular sound. We begin with what is comfortable and allow the voice to emerge at its own pace.

Sound Healing

Sound Healing offers a way to slow down, rest and listen through the whole body. Depending on the session, I may work with my voice, Tibetan bowls, drum, ocean drum, chimes and silence.

Sound may support relaxation, body awareness and a sense of inner spaciousness. It may be received quietly, or your own voice may become part of the exploration. The work is always adapted to you; there is no fixed sequence and no particular experience you are expected to have.

Poetry Medicine

A poem can sometimes reach beneath our usual explanations and touch something we have not yet been able to name. In Poetry Medicine, a poem becomes a companion, a teacher and a doorway into deeper listening.

You may bring a poem that is already calling to you, or we can discover one together. We may read it aloud, listen to its images and rhythms, notice where it meets your own life, or allow a particular line to guide reflection, movement, voice or silence.

This is not literary analysis, and you do not need to write poetry or even consider yourself a poetry lover. The invitation is simply to meet the poem and notice what it opens.

Breath Awareness

The breath can be a steady companion—not something to fix or control, but something we can learn to notice and listen with.

Gentle breath awareness may be woven into a one-to-one session to support grounding, settling and connection with the body. You may be invited to notice the natural breath, feel its movement, soften an exhalation or allow breath and sound to meet.

The breath is offered as a resource, never as a demand. You may return to ordinary breathing, change position, pause or stop at any time.

Conscious Connected Breathwork is a distinct, longer-form practice and is offered in separate sessions of two hours or more.

Gentle Movement and One-to-One Yoga

Sometimes the body asks to move before words or sound can come. Gentle movement or yoga may be included to support grounding, ease, expression and awareness.

Movement can take place seated, standing or lying down and is adapted to your body and circumstances. You do not need to be flexible or have previous yoga experience. A session may focus more fully on a personal yoga practice, or movement may be woven quietly through voice, breath, poetry or sound.

Silence and Deep Listening

Silence is not an absence from the work. It is part of the Listening Field: a place in which sensations can settle, sound can be received and something quieter may become known.

We listen not only with the ears, but with the body, imagination, voice and heart. Sometimes the most supportive part of a session is the space to pause, notice and allow what has arisen to find its own rhythm.

How the Approaches Come Together

There is no formula for a session. We may begin with conversation and grounding, move into sound or voice, meet a poem, follow a gentle movement, or rest in silence. Each becomes another doorway into listening.

The work is collaborative and choice-based. I will explain each practice before we begin, and you may decline, change, pause or stop at any time without needing to explain why.

These sessions support wellbeing, personal exploration and a more compassionate relationship with voice, breath, body and listening. They are not medical treatment, psychotherapy, counselling or crisis support, and they are not a substitute for care from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Explore Working Together

If you feel drawn to one particular approach, you are welcome to mention that when you contact me. You do not need to decide in advance exactly how we will work. We can begin with a conversation and allow the most supportive way forward to become clear together.

Enquire about a  Session

If you would like to explore working together, please tell me briefly what is drawing you to a one-to-one session and whether you would prefer to meet online or in person.

Please do not include detailed health or medical information in this contact form. For an in-person session, you will be invited to complete a confidential client form when you arrive, and we can discuss anything relevant together. For online sessions, I will explain how we will complete this before we begin.

I will reply personally with some possible dates and times. If it would be helpful, we can also arrange a free telephone consultation before deciding what might best support you.
