Sing to the stars

sound

I have been practicing, teaching, training in the area of sound healing for myself and many others over the last 15 years. The sound modality/instrument that most speaks to me is that of the human voice. I have posted about this many times, see my article on Why The Voice?

I trust the felt experience of the effect of sound, both in myself and my students and clients. Amazing things have happened… in a moment of singing or working with a spoken word piece, awareness explodes into a knowing… I discover that I have always been loved, am made from love… it’s a feeling, a knowing that changes me utterly from inside out, a transformation occurs.

No amount of science or teaching would have me know this more clearly. My clients experience this transformation regularly in our one to one treatments. For example:

  • experiences energy moving freely through a frozen leg, feeling grounded and the heart suddenly opens.
  • allowing locked in tears to arrive and fall
  • feeling safe enough to be touched by sound and allow the body to move from a place of constant stress and alertness to the deeply nourishing state of rest and sometimes blessed sleep.

What does the science say?

It is enough for me to trust in the experience and the results. Yet, there is also part of me that is excited when science can explains how or why sound works as medicine. There is now a wealth of research in the science of sound and we can begin to let the mind rest in understand what is going on!

Here’s just two research avenues talking about water and light that may begin to get you curious and interested in music as medicine.

In his siminal research using water and adding the power of intention through words, music, thoughts and prayer, Dr Emoto showed how how different sounds create different shapes in the water after freezing. Showing us the effect of sound in the waters and cells of our mostly liquid body and that how we speak to ourselves and to others really matters.

By exposing water to a particular word or piece of music, freezing it, and photographing the ice crystals formed, Dr. Emoto has shown that from beautiful words and music, come beautiful crystals, and from mean-spirited, negative words, come malformed and misshapen crystals. What is the significance? It becomes clear when we remember that the adult human body is approximately 70% water and infant bodies are about 90% water. We can be hurt emotionally and, as the water can be changed, for the worse physically by negativity. However, we are always closer to beauty when surrounded by positive thoughts, words, intentions and ultimately those vibrations.”

Can we actually sing to the stars?

Recently, I have been following the work of John Stuart Reid. Reid is an acoustic physics researcher. He has studied the physics of sound for four decades and is a respected authority in the field of cymatics, which is the area of science that makes sound visible. His research begins to answer this question of how far and what the implications are of sound travel.

When we speak or sing or tone, we are actually generating amplified thoughts; thoughts that originate in our minds and give rise to electromagnetic signals contained within our brain.

John Stuart Reid

In his research, Reid describes how sound, including our voice, has the well known acoustic quality, where the sound can be heard for approximately a mile away from the source of the sound. However, sound also has an electromagnetic quality, in which our sound is transported as heat – or light. As we speak or sing trillions of atomic collisions occur which not only carry your voice away through the air, they also create a tiny amount of heat, which is know as infrared light.

Reid shows that the sound we make is actually better represented as a sound bubble where the atoms of the sound create infrared electromagnetism, otherwise known as light. This light, like the infrared rays of the sun, can travel almost infinitely… even all the way to the stars!

sound bubble

The implications that your voice creates infrared light are profound because every cell in your body ‘sings’ predominantly in the infrared spectrum of light 6,7 and it is why your body is warm and radiates heat. Therefore, when we sing, we are actually singing the language of cells, and not only our own cells but those of everyone who are in our close proximity

John Stuart Reid

This is such exciting research coming our now and begins to explain why sound healing works and how sound is a wonderful carrier of intention, of light of energy

For more information on John’s work you can check out his website or check out this recent interview.

And so we come full circle, and return to the question

Have you been touched by the power of sound?

A voice, tender and comforting, a song, a piece of music, a spoken word? and most importantly “how did that make you feel?“.
